I feel that my school year really began before the beginning. The first step was the audition process for "With Their Eyes" in May of 2014. I was so moved with the work that the students did during auditions and couldn't wait to start working on the show. The next step was my trip to Edinburgh to learn what The Fringe Festival was all about and how the entire trip would work next summer with students. I still haven't found the words to describe my trip. The five days that I spent in Edinburgh were magical and I have never felt the power of theatre to change lives more than I did during my first time at The Fringe. As my time in Scotland passed by, my desire to find a way to get my cast there next summer grew. The students of Victor Valley High School earned the honor to perform there, and I will find a way to make it happen. I know that this trip will change their lives forever. I didn't know how much their work on "With Their Eyes" would do that as well. Step three was our fast paced, action packed, four week rehearsal of the show. I saw so much growth in my 18 actors during this time onstage and off. I believe now more than ever that we NEED to go on this trip. Our show was thought provoking, and emotional. We made the best of the theatre facilities that we were forced to use, and sold out three of our shows!
As our show closed, it seemed the whole school began to rally behind us. Teachers, students, administrators and staff were moved by the show, and want us to go to Scotland to represent VVHS. During a spirit week for a big rivalry football game, two teachers showed their spirit for The Fringe on Twin Day!
Our current fundraiser is Kilt the Coach. If we raise $1000, our principal, our Athletic Director and our Football coach will wear the kilts all day, the day of the homecoming game. We are only $500 away from achieving this goal after an outpouring of pocket change at our last two football games.
I'd like to end this entry with my favorite review of our show, and our efforts to date, it comes from an individual who is a powerful educator, a generous woman, and a true advocate for students at Victor Valley High School:
A week ago on Thursday many of you were remembering the events of 2001 in one way or another. Chris and I relived the raw emotions of the day and the months after as his drama department performed With Their Eyes: A View from a High School at Ground Zero. The 18 students shared accounts from counselors, students, teachers, and other employees from a high school within a few blocks of the twin towers. Words can't be used to describe it. This performance was selected to be part of 40 US high schools (only 9 in CA) to perform in Scotland this summer. You might see that Chris is getting to wear a Kilt soon as part of the fund raising efforts. My company has donated and I challenge all those that spend time on Facebook to support these students. Every amount adds up. I pledge an additional $10 to what I have already contributed for anyone that donates $100 or more. Companies I challenge you to match my contribution. You can contribute to the schools program through the school or through the web link that is included. Be a part of making a difference!
